Every now and then, I read a book and can’t help but envision the movie version. This is one such book. From the moment aspiring podcaster Finley is betrayed by her boyfriend to the grand gesture at the end, it has all the hallmarks of a wonderful young adult rom-com. There’s enemies-to-lovers, a narcissistic, gaslighting ex, a gorgeous, cocky (but with a heart of gold) love interest in Theo, a cheeky, loving grandmother in the mid-stages of Alzheimer’s who Finley does a podcast with, a mystery to solve, and a plot for revenge that doesn’t play out like she planned. 

Kasie West has proven, once again, why she is one of the queens of YA romance. Her characters are deftly drawn, showing a range of emotions and navigating the minefield that is both high school and teen relationships. There’s a lot of kissing, but that’s as far as it goes, so it’s appropriate for younger teens, but will be enjoyed by older ones as well. Highly recommended.

When Jake arrives for the wedding, their sniping picks up right where they left off 10 years before, but there’s a fine line between love and hate. When Olivia finds herself in the other dimension (her High Life), she experiences the life she would have had if the prom kiss had actually happened. With no memory of the intervening years, however, she can’t live genuinely and honestly, nor can she repair the relationships she damaged along the way.

This is the first book I’ve read of Lauren Kate’s, but it definitely won’t be the last. I really enjoyed this fantastical romance reminiscent of the movie 13 Going on 30. Whatever dimension, the chemistry between Jake and Olivia is palpable and the love they have for each other in the High Life is relationship goals! The friendship between Liv and Masha and her relationship with her mother in her Real Life are a wonderful depiction of female empowerment. Living in LA, it was also fun for me to read about places I enjoy just like the characters. If you’re looking for a fun summer read, check this one out. Highly recommended.

Truly, Madly, Deeply by Alexandra Bellefleur

Alexandria Bellefleur’s queer romances are always a pleasure to read. Truly, Madly, Deeply (not to be confused with the fabulous Alan Rickman movie) is a very sweet enemies-to-lovers romance between queer historical romance author Truly and family (divorce) lawyer Colin, whose meet-cute takes place when they spar about relationship advice on his sister’s top-rated podcast. The chemistry between them, masked by flirty bickering and sexual innuendo, is really hot and the sex is steamy and raw. However, it’s Colin’s kindness, devotion, and protectiveness towards Truly and the way she both challenges and defends him that make this such a special love story.

This is a slow burn, somewhat enemies-to-lovers romance featuring two bisexual characters (although there is a discussion between them where Truly questions whether she can legitimately call herself that if she’s never acted on it with any woman). Honestly, the only things that keep it from a 5* rating are the overabundant scenes where Truly and her musical theater-loving parents talk about serious stuff using song titles and lyrics. It was cute at first, but then became absurd. I also started getting annoyed by how many times (six) Bellefleur mentions Colin’s moles. Otherwise, I definitely recommend reading it.

Clayborn has done it again, written a beautiful romance framed by a complex story that proves that true love can flourish, even under the most trying conditions.

In The Other Side of Disappearing, Jess has parented her younger sister Tegan for ten years after their mother Charlotte left them to travel with a con man, Lynton Bainbridge. During that time, Jess has dedicated her entire life to ensuring that Tegan is safe and loved, sacrificing her own wants and needs, including pursuing any romantic relationships or friendships. When their life is suddenly upended by the arrival of podcaster Salem Durant and Adam Hawkins, who Tegan (pretending to be Jess) contacted about her mother’s involvement with Lynton (the subject of Salem’s groundbreaking show before he disappeared with their mother), Jess has no choice but to reluctantly accompany them on a road trip that follows the clues from five postcards her mother sent before she completely disappeared.

From Tennessee to Florida to a stop at Adam’s family farm in Missouri and then onto Oklahoma, New Mexico and finally Washington, Jess and Adam grow close despite her trust issues, worry about Tegan, and anger at both Salem for digging into her painful past and her mother for prioritizing men over her daughters. On the other side of Charlotte’s disappearance is the complex trauma which Jess tried desperately to suppress. Confronted with the past and the choices Charlotte made, the feelings of betrayal, abandonment, and Jess’s fear that she failed to make the right choices in trying to protect Tegan force their way to the surface. When the mystery is solved, will the fallout be more than Jess can handle?

Clayborn wisely chose a dual point of view to delve deeply into what both Jess and Adam are thinking and feeling. Although Adam is falling for Jess, his emotions and motivations are influenced by the death of his best friend and football teammate Cole and his need to set the record straight about the NFL’s and others’ handling of his mental illness and complicity in his death. How he balances his needs with his awareness of Jess’s issues is neither trite nor sensationalized. They’re just two traumatized human beings who are figuring themselves out and acknowledging their flaws and insecurities. This emotional and slightly steamy love story wrapped in a mystery is heartwarming and unforgettable. Highly recommended!
